Needs Assessment: Justification for Topic

Problem...
Our problem is that students with English as a second language have difficulty transitioning into an English speaking classroom and students with developmental disabilities can have difficulty communicating and interacting with others. The problem is based on the lack of knowledge. The need is for Spanish speaking children that have no background with the English language to gain knowledge of basic English words they need for preschool. The problem is also based on a lack of skills. Students starting preschool with developmental disabilities may need assistance with social interaction.

Addressing Needs with Book Topic...
Our book will help students learn important English words they will use daily in school. It will describe basic classroom objects and people. The book will help students communicate these words correctly as well. Social skills will be addressed to help students make friends and work well with others.

Goal...
The goal of this book is to orient and instruct Spanish speaking students and students with developmental delays as they enter a new environment that presents many new challenges.

Related Instruction...
-The name game will get students familiar with their new friends and help them communicate their name to others.
-Flash cards with visual aids will help students see the object as well as the word in English on one side and the Spanish word on the other side.
-A sensory activity for students to touch items in the classroom and discuss the texture will help with communication skills and English language reinforcement.
